A Travelogue of Wild Elephant Valley

2025-09-24

I felt like getting away to clear my mind, and for some reason, I chose Xishuangbanna. My first stop was Elephant Valley, where I decided to try my luck—hoping fate might bring me a meaningful encounter. Usually, I explore places on my own, but here at Elephant Valley, I actually hired a guide. Maybe it was my desire to gain a deeper understanding of these majestic elephants, or perhaps I just wanted to learn more about the lush tropical rainforest. Or maybe I simply craved someone to chat with along the way. As I listened to Xiao Zhang, my guide, explain how his work uniform wasn’t the vibrant Dai attire you’d typically see—it was, in fact, a protective camouflage blending seamlessly with the forest’s natural hues. He explained that this cleverly designed uniform is part of a broader effort to safeguard the area’s delicate wildlife. In that moment, my respect for this place grew even stronger, making me tread lightly as I wandered, careful not to disturb a single blade of grass, leaf, insect, or bird that calls this magical ecosystem home.

After purchasing my ticket at the South Gate of Wild Elephant Valley and entering the park, I decided to upgrade my admission by adding the cable car option—something I personally felt was the best way to fully experience everything the park had to offer. Plus, right at the ticket counter, a staff member kindly provided a detailed map explanation! Xiao Zhang suggested I take the cable car first, since the misty morning in the tropical rainforest looked straight out of a fairyland—absolutely breathtaking. Filled with this enchanting anticipation, I followed his advice. The cable car ride itself is quite long, stretching over two kilometers and taking about 35 minutes. Along the way, Xiao Zhang and I chatted casually about life, elephants, and the vibrant wonders of the tropical rainforest. And as we rode, he even treated me to a little impromptu performance, playing the bamboo flute beautifully with a rendition of "Bamboo Under the Moonlight"—a melody that was nothing short of pure bliss to listen to. Next, I trekked through the tropical rainforest, walking along the elevated observation boardwalk. There, I spotted elephant dung and fresh footprints. Following the direction of the tracks, I noticed that the nearby bushes had been gently bent—evidence of an elephant’s passage. Even on the broad leaves of giant taro plants, faint imprints remained, as if the massive creatures had just stepped by moments ago. It was almost as if I could picture an adult elephant moving with its steady, deliberate gait, while a young calf hurried after, its tiny legs scurrying eagerly. Amidst those silent footprints lay the tender warmth of a family herd on the move. P1039447

After stepping off the boardwalk, you can spot parrots and peacocks—and don’t forget to stop for a photo opportunity! Continuing further ahead, you’ll enter a vibrant, colorful world: the Butterfly Garden, where countless butterflies flutter gracefully in mid-air, instantly giving you a taste of what it might feel like to be Xiangfei herself. Just beyond that lies the Snake and Lizard Garden, though your little one seems a bit nervous around snakes…

Xiao Zhang said, "Our Wa people's 'black brothers and sisters' can actually make their hair dance!" After hearing this, everyone was filled with excitement. (The song-and-dance performances are held four times a day—at 10:30 AM, 11:30 AM, 1:20 PM, and 3:30 PM.) As expected, the dances of ethnic minorities can be both graceful and incredibly dynamic—especially the mesmerizing Wa-style hair-flinging performance, which was absolutely stunning to watch!

After finishing the tour, we immediately headed to Xishuangbanna’s beloved mascot—elephants! At the entrance of the Elephant Science Park lies the Elephant Canteen, where the pachyderms gather after their educational sessions to enjoy a meal. Xiao Zhang even enthusiastically introduced me to the special "elephant feast" and, without hesitation, booked a portion for us right there. The elephants at the Elephant Science Park are absolutely adorable! As Xiao Zhang explained, Wild Elephant Valley is actually a conservation area. Though these elephants no longer have the skills to survive in the wild, they’re allowed to roam freely in the mountains outside their training hours—exploring, foraging for food, and even playing to keep them active and engaged. And let me tell you, those mischievous little guys can be downright hilarious: they love spraying water, striking cute poses, and just being playful! The Q&A session with the park’s lively host was especially fun too—everyone eagerly raised their hands to answer, creating an incredibly energetic and friendly atmosphere. Strangely enough, this experience sparked my imagination about what life must be like for these magnificent creatures in their natural habitat. Finally, after the informative elephant presentation, I grabbed a cucumber from the canteen and carefully handed it to one of the elephants. To my delight, the giant tusked friend used its incredibly dexterous trunk to gently curl the vegetable—and boy, that trunk is *so* sensitive!

After the elephant finished its meal, it was my turn to dine— and let me tell you, the elephant’s feast was truly a feast for the senses: vibrant in color, rich with aroma, and bursting with flavor. Plus, it was perfectly balanced for health and sustainability. Once I’d savored every bite of the elephant’s culinary masterpiece, it was time to wrap up the day’s adventure.

Throughout the entire Wild Elephant Valley journey, what touched me most was the "unique spring scenery" of winter—lush greenery, dotted with vibrant blossoms, creating a lively, floral paradise. Add to that the crystal-clear sky, serene white clouds drifting lazily overhead, and the warm, golden sunlight generously bathing everything in its glow. Such perfect weather naturally fills you with joy and delight. This breathtaking landscape, brimming with both vitality and clarity, is truly mesmerizing, leaving you feeling utterly content and uplifted. P1027606
