Introduction to Wild Elephant Valley
Located within the Mengyang Sub-Reserve of the Xishuangbanna National Nature Reserve and designated as a "Man and the Biosphere Reserve" by UNESCO, Yexianggu is China's first batch of national-level eco-tourism demonstration zones—and a renowned AAAA-rated national tourist attraction—dedicated to showcasing, educating, researching, and conserving Asian elephants.
The Asian elephant is a species protected under Appendix I of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES), as well as a nationally designated key protected wild animal at Level I in China. Historically, these majestic creatures were once widely distributed across the Yangtze River basin, Guangdong and Guangxi provinces, and even as far north as the Yellow River region. However, due to increasingly harsh climatic and geographic conditions, Asian elephants have been forced to migrate southward over time. Today, they are primarily found in regions such as Xishuangbanna, Pu'er, and Lincang in Yunnan Province, China. Among these areas, Xishuangbanna Wild Elephant Valley stands out as a critical habitat for Asian elephants in China, situated at the junction between the eastern and western sections of the Mengyang Nature Reserve. It serves as a vital corridor where wild Asian elephants from both regions converge and interact.
Xishuangbanna Wild Elephant Valley is a scenic area centered on Asian elephant conservation, serving as a vibrant showcase of the harmonious coexistence between humans and elephants—and humans and nature—in Xishuangbanna Prefecture. It’s also one of the country’s first National Ecotourism Demonstration Zones, a National Science Education Base, the Xishuangbanna Asian Elephant Rescue and Breeding Center, a Science Education Base in Yunnan Province, and a scientific research base dedicated to wildlife rescue and conservation. Dubbed the "Bridge Between Humans and Asian Elephants," it offers visitors a unique opportunity to connect with these majestic creatures.
