The Wild Elephant Valley Butterfly Garden originally served as a research and experimental base for the "Tropical Butterfly Artificial Breeding" project, a collaboration between China's former Ministry of Forestry (now the National Forestry and Grassland Administration) and the World Wildlife Fund (WWF), conducted within the Xishuangbanna National Nature Reserve. Detailed description

It was the first tropical butterfly breeding facility established on mainland China.

The Butterfly Garden covers an area of 1.5 mu and focuses on breeding rare, highly ornamental butterfly species such as the Golden Birdwing, Common Birdwing, Jade-banded Swallowtail, Red-spotted Swallowtail, Tiger Swallowtail, Golden Swallowtail, Red Sawtooth Blue, White-banded Sawtooth Blue, Dead Leaf Butterfly, and Beautiful Blue Butterfly. Annually, the garden can artificially raise around 300,000 butterflies. Butterflies are among the most stunning insects in the world, often referred to as "flying flowers"—and indeed, every vibrant color found in nature can be traced back to these mesmerizing creatures.
