A Spontaneous Adventure — Exploring the Wild Elephant Valley
"Mom, I want to see elephants! I’ve heard for ages about this magical place in Xishuangbanna—Wild Elephant Valley. It’s home to vast, lush tropical rainforests, where herds of wild elephants roam leisurely through the verdant landscape. As a vital hub for Asian elephant communication and gathering, it’s always been on my bucket list. But somehow, I’d never managed to find the time—until today, that is. Hearing my son mention it made me and his dad decide right away: ‘Let’s go!’ So, without much hesitation, we quickly packed our bags, caught the earliest flight to Xishuangbanna, and set off on our unforgettable elephant-hunting adventure. Of course, our first stop upon arriving in Xishuangbanna was none other than the Wild Elephant Valley—the very spot we’d dreamed of visiting. To get a deeper understanding of this incredible place, after buying our tickets, we hired a knowledgeable guide named Xiao Li. From the moment she greeted us, Xiao Li left a fantastic impression: warm, cheerful, with a sweet smile and an incredibly friendly demeanor. And with her by our side, our family of three stepped into the heart of the scenic area."
First, we were greeted by a Wa ethnic group welcoming dance. The young men beat the rhythmic thumping of wooden drums, while the girls’ sweet, melodious singing instantly left me in awe—what a warm and vibrant people the Wa truly are! Next, led by Xiao Li, we explored the Snake-Lizard Garden and the Butterfly Garden. Here, we encountered a fascinating array of creatures and gained a deeper understanding of why biodiversity is essential for our environment. As for snakes—those cold-blooded, often intimidating reptiles—I must admit, I’m absolutely terrified of them. One glance was enough to make me bolt away! But the highlight of the visit had to be the Butterfly Garden, where countless stunning butterflies fluttered freely across the grounds. Though most were beautiful species I couldn’t name, I instantly transformed into a photo enthusiast, snapping away nonstop as if my life depended on it—literally trying to capture every single one in my camera! And then, when we spotted the Chinese Leaf Butterfly, my entire family was utterly amazed. Nature never ceases to amaze us—this particular butterfly’s camouflage skills were nothing short of extraordinary!

Afterward, we stepped onto the elevated boardwalk and began our elephant-finding adventure. The scenery along the boardwalk was breathtaking, with crisp, fresh air brimming with plenty of negative oxygen ions. Xiao Li explained that the primary purpose of building this elevated walkway was to reclaim more ground-level space for wildlife, bringing the eco-friendly concept of "people walking above while elephants roam freely below" to life. Thanks to the boardwalk, much of the surrounding vegetation has been beautifully preserved. My son, who grew up surrounded by the concrete jungle of the city—and far removed from his phone and iPad—now gets to experience nature up close in a way that feels truly meaningful.

Although the scenery was picturesque and undeniably beautiful, to be honest, after walking for a while without spotting any wild elephants, I felt a bit disappointed. In my imagination, herds of elephants were supposed to be everywhere. Still, the journey brought plenty of little surprises—along the way, we even spotted macaques, gibbons, and slow lorises, among other fascinating creatures.

Just when I was feeling disappointed, Xiao Li received a phone call—and then, beaming with excitement, he excitedly told me, "Sister Zhang, our staff just confirmed: there are wild elephants active at the observatory! Let’s hurry—before they decide to leave!" Hearing this, I couldn’t contain my joy. We practically sprinted as a family toward our destination. Even before we arrived, we could already hear the elephants’ deep, rumbling calls. As we drew closer, we spotted a massive herd of wild elephants happily bathing in the river. I counted carefully—it was 22 elephants in total. Some of them were using their trunks to dig around in the water, curiously exploring something beneath the surface. I turned to Xiao Li and asked, “What on earth are they doing?” He explained, “They’re actually eating the mineral-rich mud from the riverbed! This area happens to have an enormous salt-and-mineral pool, and by consuming it, the elephants aid their digestion while replenishing much-needed energy.” Among the herd, there were also adorable baby elephants, huddled protectively right in the center, surrounded by their larger, more experienced companions. And let me tell you, those little ones were absolutely adorable! But that wasn’t all—some of the adults were even playfully tossing mud all over themselves, acting downright mischievous. Xiao Li chuckled and added, “You know, elephants do this not only for fun but also as a clever way to shield themselves from the sun, cool off, and even ward off pesky mosquitoes. Truly remarkable creatures!”

Before we knew it, more than an hour had passed, and our stomachs were already rumbling with hunger. Reluctantly, we turned around and headed back, ready to head to the restaurant for the famous elephant meal. On the way back, Xiao Li shared fascinating insights about elephants with us—details I’d never heard before. My son listened intently, eagerly tugging on Xiao Li’s hand as he peppered him with questions about everything that piqued his curiosity. Just before arriving at the restaurant, I’d honestly assumed the elephant meal would consist of just a few carrots and bananas. But when we finally sat down, I quickly realized how wrong I’d been! The table was beautifully laid out with an abundance of exotic wild vegetables and fruits—items I’d never even seen before—that elephants absolutely adore. There was also a delightful array of main dishes, like pineapple rice and flavorful fried rice, all arranged with such artistry that I almost hesitated to take my first bite. Overall, the elephant meal left me feeling deeply connected to nature—it was all about ecology, sustainability, and wellness. It wasn’t just a feast for the palate; it was a visual masterpiece too, a true celebration of both taste and beauty.

Xiao Li told us that at 2:00 PM, there would still be a natural elephant behavior show at the Elephant Science Park. But since we’d already seen domesticated elephants in Thailand and encountered plenty of wild ones in the forest earlier, we decided to skip it and head straight to our next destination. On the way back, my son suddenly said, “Mom, let’s come back to Wild Elephant Valley again sometime—whenever you’re up for it!” I replied, “Of course, as long as you want to, we’ll make it happen.” It truly was a day filled with unforgettable moments. Wild Elephant Valley—it’s a place I’ll definitely return to someday.
