Walking with Elephants

2025-09-15

  Course Content Overview

Asian elephants are rainforest engineers—their population dynamics and behavioral patterns profoundly influence entire ecosystems. To effectively protect these majestic creatures, it’s crucial to gain a deeper understanding of the challenges and underlying issues in conservation efforts. The core of this course involves conducting hands-on field observations of Asian elephant behavior. Participants will work collaboratively while maintaining a safe distance to avoid disturbing the elephants, carefully documenting their natural activities such as foraging, playing, and learning in the wild. The process will rely on scientifically rigorous animal behavior observation techniques for accurate recording and analysis. Additionally, students will learn essential behavioral science principles and gain insights into the critical work of rescuing and rehabilitating injured or displaced elephants.

  Course Features

Being able to conduct safe ethological research on Asian elephants in the wild tropical rainforest is something that can only be done at Wild Elephant Valley across all of China—making it a truly unique learning opportunity and activity.
