Xishuangbanna Wild Elephant Valley

Located within the Mengyang Sub-Reserve of the Xishuangbanna National Nature Reserve and nestled inside the "UNESCO Man and the Biosphere Reserve," Ye Xiang Gu is China's first batch of national-level eco-tourism demonstration zones—and a renowned AAAA-rated national tourist attraction—dedicated to showcasing, educating about, researching, and conserving Asian elephants. Asian elephants are listed under Appendix I of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES), making them a critically endangered species under China’s national first-class key protected wildlife category.

Observatory

Observatory

The observation tower has witnessed the origin and development of Wild Elephant Valley. This area is home to the highest concentration of wild Asian elephants and sees their most frequent activity, making it a key scientific monitoring site for conservation managers and researchers studying these majestic creatures. Originally established in the early 1990s by scientists, the tower was designed to facilitate research on wild Asian elephants.
Nature Education Base

Nature Education Base

As a "National Science Education Base" and a "National Ecological Environment Science Education Base," Wild Elephant Valley leverages its unique tropical rainforest environment and the rare resource of Asian elephants to develop immersive nature-based learning programs centered around the "Xishuangbanna Natural Knowledge System" and the "Asian Elephant Knowledge System." These programs are jointly taught by leading Asian elephant researchers and a team of expert nature educators. Additionally, the center actively organizes a series of engaging主题活动, including "Asian Elephant Behavior Observation," "Asian Elephant Conservation Workshops," "Stories of Asian Elephant Rescue and Human-Elephant Harmony," and "The Relationship Between Asian Elephants and Their Ecosystem." Since their launch in 2018, these programs have received widespread acclaim from participants, solidifying our commitment to becoming China’s premier base for Asian elephant conservation research and the country’s leading classroom for Asian elephant science education.
Elephant Science Park

Elephant Science Park

Closeness breeds love; protection ensures longevity. Through the Asian Elephant Natural Behavior Exhibition at the Elephant Science Park, the public can gain a deeper understanding of the elephants' physiology, ecology, and behavioral patterns. Together, we can raise awareness about the current status of Asian elephants, as well as the critical importance of tropical rainforest conservation and biodiversity preservation. Let’s actively embrace ecological civilization, fostering harmonious coexistence between humans and elephants.
Asian Elephant Museum

Asian Elephant Museum

The Asian Elephant Museum was established in 2008 and underwent an upgrade and renovation in 2023. The museum spans 800 square meters and is divided into four exhibition halls: the Introductory Hall, the Listen to Elephant Life Hall, the Protect Elephant Growth Hall, and the Multimedia Hall. As a science-based museum centered around the Asian elephant, it’s a collaborative project between Wild Elephant Valley and the Administration of Xishuangbanna National Nature Reserve. The museum aims to educate the public about elephants, raise awareness about protecting Asian elephants, highlight the urgent survival challenges faced by these majestic creatures, and actively work toward reducing human-elephant conflicts—ultimately fostering harmonious coexistence between humans and elephants.

Butterfly Garden

Butterfly Garden

The Wild Elephant Valley Butterfly Garden originally served as a research and experimental base for the "Tropical Butterfly Artificial Breeding" project, a collaboration between China's former Ministry of Forestry (now the National Forestry and Grassland Administration) and the World Wildlife Fund (WWF), conducted within the Xishuangbanna National Nature Reserve. It was the first tropical butterfly breeding facility established on mainland China.

This includes species like pythons and giant lizards—wild animals in urgent need of help due to reasons such as getting lost, injury, or illness—and serving as their "warm home." By highlighting some of the most iconic wildlife from Xishuangbanna's tropical region, the garden offers visitors a deeper understanding of these creatures' natural behaviors, fostering greater awareness about wildlife conservation. Together, we can protect these precious resources and work toward a harmonious coexistence between humans and nature—a beautiful vision of shared prosperity with the natural world.

I felt like getting away to clear my mind, and for some reason, I chose Xishuangbanna. My first stop was Elephant Valley, where I decided to try my luck—hoping fate might bring me a meaningful encounter. Usually, I explore places on my own, but here at Elephant Valley, I actually hired a guide. Maybe it was my desire to gain a deeper understanding of elephants, or perhaps I just wanted to learn more about the lush tropical rainforest. Or maybe I simply craved someone to chat with along the way. As I listened to Xiao Zhang, my guide, explain how his bright green work uniform wasn’t some fancy traditional Dai attire—but instead a cleverly designed "camouflage" that blends seamlessly with the forest’s natural hues. He mentioned it’s part of a broader effort to protect wildlife by making humans less conspicuous in this delicate ecosystem. Hearing this instantly made me feel even more respectful of the place. As I wandered through the valley, I found myself moving with extra care, determined not to disturb a single leaf, insect, or bird—afraid of inadvertently disrupting the serene balance of this magical corner of nature.

With a sense of awe for nature and curiosity about the wild Asian elephants, I embarked on my journey to Wild Elephant Valley. Outside the window, the lush vegetation—thriving under the tropical monsoon climate—grew denser by the minute. The humid air was infused with the delicate fragrance of decaying leaves and wild flowers, making each breath feel like a profound conversation with this life-giving land.

Xishuangbanna is exactly the place I’ve always dreamed of visiting—where I can head to Wild Elephant Valley to spot majestic wild elephants up close, getting face-to-face with Asia’s largest land mammal; wander through the Primitive Forest Park to marvel at vibrant peacocks; and even explore traditional Dai villages to admire their iconic bamboo houses. This January, I finally embarked on a solo tour to Xishuangbanna and made it to the very place I’d been longing to see. Words can’t express how thrilled I am!
